The Battle of Jutland, in WW1, had several British BCs get ahead of the fleet and end to in a fight with German battleships. Even though the German ships had smaller guns the lack of armor got several British BCs blown up. HMS Indefatigable, HMS Queen Mary, and HMS Invincible. HMS Princess Royal was badly damaged.

That lesson had to be repeated in WW2!Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11635784352780834494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20147126.post-57255073973148847912015-12-11T19:48:12.821-06:002015-12-11T19:48:12.821-06:00I think that what killed Repulse was a lack of ant...I think that what killed Repulse was a lack of anti-torpedo blisters. They were fast, fast as a cruiser but they just could not take it in a fight with a battleship.Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11635784352780834494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20147126.post-89771650236417052752015-12-11T11:54:29.456-06:002015-12-11T11:54:29.456-06:00Corrected, thanks. However, it wasn't just the Allies that paid for their hubris. The Japanese themselves thought that they were the superior race and that the weak British and Americans would fold once their east Asian conquests were a fait accompli. They were sadly mistaken.

Winston Churchill, in an address to Congress shortly afterword asked: "What sort of people do they think we are?" If the British had an aircraft carrier, it would have gone to the bottom too. The tactics of carrier defensive airpower were insufficient at the time and the wing on the HMS Indomitable was too small in number. They might have splashed a few Japanese airplanes. That is true, but remember what happened to the fighters defending Midway Island...
