I'm back... for the most part.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but it's been a long, difficult August. And sadly every bit of this is 100% true.

It started for me on August 3rd. It was my day off work and I was looking forward to a vacation with my friend Aaron which was going to start a couple days later. Everything was packed, and I'd only stuck around because I had to be in court for a couple of cases on the 3rd. As it was such a nice day, I'd decided to ride one of the station motorcycles to court instead of taking a cruiser. I had no idea what consequences that choice was going to bring me as I rode out of the station. All I knew was that it was a great day and it felt good to ride, good to be a cop.

I was feeling great when I got to court, and it only got better when I won my two cases, both at trial. I was on my way back to the station, planning on running a few short errands, when I stopped for gas at one of our maintenance yards. It was so routine, so normal. But I don't remember getting the gas now. I don't remember riding out of the yard and I don't remember the speeding car coming at me or the screeching brakes. I know there was an impact but I don't remember that either. My memory is mercifully clear of all these events. I don't remember lying on the hot pavement waiting for my people to arrive, or the helicopter medivac. I vaguely remember being surrounded by cops at the hospital, including lots of white-shirted supervisors. That was my first clue that something bad was happening. I recall some doctor telling me that he'd do everything that he could to save my foot. I recall saying: "You'd damned well better." And then I don't remember anything until I woke up later without my left foot.

I'll add more to this tomorrow.
