According to this Arizona Republic story, Three environmentalists from California were arrested for riding their mountain bikes in an area of the Grand Canyon that was posted off-limits to bicycles. Sean Monterastelli, 23; David Yost, 24; and Jacob Thompson, 24, received 48 hours in jail, a five-year ban from national parks, fines and probation after National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers found their website with a journal and pictures of the violation. The Rangers subsequently tracked the three down in Tucson. According to the story, violator Jacob Thompson said the three realized they were violating the law, but decided to do it anyway after biking through 45 miles of snow on the North Rim.
Of course many bicyclists and enviropests are now reportedly outraged by the sentence, but the fact is that these guys knew it was wrong and still decided to do it. So harsh or not, it's on them. But the ironic part: the three were on an international ride to promote environmentalism.
Sheesh!
