So today I'm walking from one office to another, and I pass one of the local panhandlers sitting in the shade of one of the sidewalk planters. This one is a regular--she parks herself there every day and just calls out one word at everyone who passes: "Chaaange...!" And she's out there so much that if it were an above-board job, she'd make a killing in overtime.
well today I walked by and she was asking for change, and I happened to notiice that she had on headphones...and they were connected to what looked to be a fairly new CD-playing walkman stereo. WTF? What does she need the change for? Batteries? Of course all of her clothes--and her handbag--were pretty new and stylish too. She's obviously forgotten that even faux panhandlers are supposed to at least try to look impoverished.
But the final clue that told me that she was a fraud and not really hurting: She was playing rap music on her stereo. I heard it as I walked by.
Everyone knows that anyone who is really down and out listens to the Blues.
"Change" my ass. But I'll give you two dollars for that stereo.
