I decided to take you-know-who for a run down by the Shenandoah River.
With temps back up into the 60's, it was a good day to just take a walk and enjoy this preview of Spring to come.
While walking, I reflected back on a trip a few years ago with Liz. We were up in Barrow, Alaska on a fine winter day about this time of the year. The temperature was well below zero and my previous camera--the first digital camera that I'd ever owned--fell from my jacket pocket to the ice-covered ground. Normally it wouldn't have been a problem, but it was so cold out that the camera's plastic body had become brittle enough to immediately crack upon hitting the ground. I was shocked. In fact, I seem to recall saying a few things and expressing myself in a way which in turn shocked Liz, someone who we all know doesn't--or at least didn't at that time--use profanity. I was never able to fix that camera as the camera shops all said that it had to go back to the factory and the factory repair estimate and shipping was so high that it was easier to just buy the one that I have now as a replacement.
And just as I began to ponder these industry practices which practically ensure that no one repairs electronic devices any longer, my thoughts were interrupted by a loud splash. Sure enough, Lagniappe spotted a stick in the river and plunged in to get it.
Stupid dog...It's February, not August...and you're a German Shepherd, not a Labrador Retriever. And the walk now had to be stretched out another 45 minutes or so to dry Lagniappe off before allowing him back in my nice, clean vehicle.
I remember that very well. With a piece of duct tape your camera was as good as new.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's not that I don't swear, it's just that I try to save it for extraordinary circumstances.
But I'll bet he had fun!
ReplyDeleteAwww...looks like he was enjoying his swimming trip! ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah, Kira doesn't realize that it is February and not June/July either. So strange for a Siberian Husky to WANT to jump into any body of water she finds.
