Saturday Man Movie

In The Big Red One (1980), Lee Marvin takes his squad after a sniper.

Lee Marvin walked the walk, too. He was a combat Marine in World War Two, where he was shot and wounded on Saipan. Here's buried in Arlington National Cemetery, and I took this shot there a few years ago, in section 7A, near Greg "Pappy" Boyington and boxer Joe Louis.

  1. That he did. A different breed of movie stars, no question!

My roomie had him as a 'regular' customer, when she was a barista in Tucson.
Apparently quite a nice guy. Tried to get away from war and cop movies, but they kept pulling him back in.
    Abhorred violence.

  3. Unfortunately, movie stars like that are an aberration of nature these days.

    Excellent movie, too!

  4. One of my personal favorites. The director, Samuel Fuller, was a member of the Big Red One during WWII and participated in most of the landings in the European theater. Notice the lack of musical soundtrack? Fuller insisted on that for certain scenes, to promote realism and dramatic tension.
