The Earl Jones link does nothing for me; private blog?
Rooster Cogburn and Clint Eastwood's Josey Wales were both Missouri bushwhackers who rode with Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson. In the book that The Outlaw Josey Wales was based on (Forrest Carter's Gone To Texas) the bushwhackers were described in terms of a sort of land battleship, with the horse substituting for iron hull and saddle-holstered Colts substituting for the gun turrets.
