R.I.P. Colonel "Bud" Day.

Our nation is diminished today. One less giant walks among us.

Col. George "Bud" Day, Medal of Honor recipient, dies at 88

Veteran of three wars--World War Two, Korea and Vietnam, he spent five and a half years as a POW in the latter after creating the Misty fast FAC program. On his return, he became a staunch advocate for veterans and brought the lawsuits that established the TRICARE veterans' medical benefit program in it's present form. A staunch conservative who loved this country and spoke out frequently when necessary, he'll be missed.

It was just over a year ago that I reviewed his book here:

Book Review: American Patriot: The Life and Wars of Colonel Bud Day

Read the review, please. It says so much more than I can quickly re-type here. Then go buy the book.

I was struck when I read that book about what an amazing man he was--one of those rare men who are able to influence the direction of a country all by themselves. Colonel Day was such a man, and many veterans owe him their thanks.

For Colonel Day. Those who knew him or read his book will understand:

  2. Damn. Read that book based on your recommendation, and nearly jumped in the truck to drive to Florida just to meet him after finishing the book. He was truly one-of-a-kind.

    Blue skies and tailwinds, Colonel.

  7. A great read is "Bury Me Upsidedown". It is the story of the "Misty" Forward Air Controllers that he led.
