USS Drum

Here's a long but interesting video about the massive restoration of USS Drum (SS 228), a World War Two sub on display in Battleship Cove, Mobile, Alabama. Watching it is like a personal guided tour.

  1. Went aboard her in 1970, along with the USS Alabama (BB-60), of course. I was around 9 or 10 at the time, and the experience is what made me desire to go into the Navy after I finished high school.

  2. Hey Murphy;

    We went there last year, and it was a great visit seeing the Alabama in her WWII glory and they were working on the sub when we were there, the back was exposed as they were replacing the corroded metal in the stern. Very good visit and worthy of the trip

  3. Walked through her in 2010. Movies don't convey how small the workspace is. The wife and I were very impressed with the restoration results; you could tell the volunteers really cared about the boat.
