She's killing me.

So now that I've apparently won the battle to keep Miss Memphis Belle from burrowing under the fence and going romp-about in the neighborhood, she's now climbing over the dog run fence.

Much as I hated filling holes and shoring up the fence foundation with rocks and dirt, that pales beside the new task--building the fence higher along roughly 30% of the perimeter of the pen.

I'm thinking that it's just going to be easier to give her a key to the front door.

Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above
Don't fence me in

wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to run an invisible fence cable hung on the top of the fence? I figure in six months, she will get the idea.
But be advised, I am still on her side...!

  2. Fit her with a bell that will ring in her ears every time she gets out and no treats for her!

  3. I remember the liberal neighbors with the yappy dog at the last house. I had let the woman of the household know that coyotes had been coming into the backyards with the severe cold and to keep her dogs close in and under direct supervision. She looked at me and said "Oh, that's OK, we have an invisible fence". Yup.

  4. Some dogs are just escape artists. I had a Brittney Spaniel like that when I was a kid. That little SOB would turn around a grin at you, and then BOLT....We were always getting calls from miles away when he decided to investigate new people...

  6. Hey Murphy,

As soon as I saw the title, I figured it was Belle not Dianne Feinstein or Barbara Boxer killing you.....Either an invisible fence or a 45 degree angle inward tilt for any extension you might add. Kinda what you see with fences surrounding "the pokey". Just an idea. And Yes I feel your pain...I have a half coon, Half lab dog that is your best buddy except when he is off the leash....then it is "who are you?" as he bolts for the woods.....again.

  7. Ouch... And yeah, angled in is the ONLY way to keep them from climbing out.

  9. Electric fence wire along the top and bottom of the fence that's hooked up to a car battery. It'll modify her behavior pretty quick, of course given what I now know about you all bets are off on how often you get zapped. Sad to say I fall into the same hapless category...sigh.

  11. Hot wire and/or angled fence top

But all that'll do really is force her to find a new method to get out again. She needs something to DO. The traditional suggestions are agility or another dog sport. But mental work often works just as well. Trick training, strict obedience training, regularly, daily!
