Sorry Belle...

Late last night, someone sent me an e-mail with this video of a Marmot attached. Of course I played it, and the next thing I heard was a series of crashes and bangs as Belle raced through the house in the dark trying to get to me and/or the marmot and not caring one lick about what was in front of her. I'd never seen her react like that before. She went totally batcrap insane when she heard that sound.

Murphy just lay there on his bed looking at her like: "You idiot".

And of course I had to do it again once she settled down just to see if it would happen again. It did.

And it just worked again now. She ran down the hall so fast that she couldn't make the turn into my office on the hardwood floor and she smacked into the door frame. And this time, Murphy was with her. What is it about this marmot noise that sets the dogs off like that?

    Hard-wired in, apparently.

  3. Must have had an encounter with a groundhog as a pup. I just tested the video on my aged Jack Russell bitch and she just gave me the stink-eye.

And I'm thinking that they should have a character in the next Deadpool movie called The Marmot, that should make that shriek.

  4. 5 dogs sleeping in this room (My granddog is visiting) ranging from a Rottweiler-German Shepherd mix (aforementioned granddog, a Copeland hound, a Jack Russell, a Dachsund Rat Terrier mix and a Chihuahua-Rat Terrier mix (our neighbor on the north fence has a studley Rat Terrier). Played that vid twice, the second with the volume up. The Wife came running in and almost lost it in the final turn, trying to find out if that was me screaming.... The Dogs? The GrandDog opened one eye as if to say "juvat, that Marmot video is as old as you!" The rest couldn't be bothered to wake up from their naps.

I think it's something in Belle's kibble. You moistening it with Espresso maybe?

  10. Nutria babies make that sound too. The bounty on them being good you can station yourself in the middle of an infested waterway and use a caught baby to attract adults who will swim up to your boat to investigate. They're an invasive species and you're helping the environment.

  11. Sounds like a "rabbit in distress" call. They call 'yotes with that sound.

  12. I called Sienna into the room, then played the video. Her ears perked up and she looked at the screen, but otherwise wasn't overly concerned with it.

  13. Perry's ears twitched initially. But nobody bothered to raise their heads.

  14. Abby Lab just lay there and yawned. It should be noted that Nancy Grace's voice sets me off like that.

  15. LOL. Funny. I love marmots. I used to film them when I was hiking. That noise makes anyone perk up.

  16. I hope the guy had the decency to let the animal go when he was finished scaring the hell out of it for his own amusement.

  17. My 12 week old kitten woke up from a nap and was very interested but not overly excited.

  18. My sister talks to my dog in a tone of voice similar to the marmot. My dog goes bananas and often wets the floor from excitement. Sis just can't understand why my dog does that. Now I know she has a marmot voice. Alway thought it was 'fish-wife' frequency.

  19. I played it a few times, none of my three GSD's reacted. I'll try tomorrow.
