Saw this beauty at Eglin the other day, too.
Looks like any other World War Two-vintage C-47 cargo plane, doesn't it?
You could think that...but you'd be wrong. Look at the left side.
Mini-guns. Three of them. It's an AC-47 gunship, a.k.a. "Spooky", a.k.a. "Puff the Magic Dragon"
These two-decade-old cargo birds really put the beat-down on the bad guys and were total game-changers when they came into use.
You even see one in John Wayne's The Green Berets at about 1:09 into this clip:
I SO wanted to do something like this with my Cessna and my M-60, but for some reason, the FAA has a rule against it.
The FAA failed to understand our need of the M-60 on your Cessna
ReplyDeletePuff wins! :-)
ReplyDeleteLoved the B 17, enjoyed the blow torch, but this is my idea of a proper aircraft. Old Slow and Deadly. When I win the lottery a DC3/C47 is on my list, and these days the gunship version makes a lot of sense. Of course a gun nosed B25 would work too.
ReplyDeleteThe A-26 Invader was the ultimate, but that's way down the line yet.
DeleteI was thinking along the lines of clearing 270....So yeah, an A 26 would work fine.
DeleteWould you settle for a custom paint job and some LEDs that blink rapidly?
ReplyDeleteNaw...got to be real, so I can rain down justice on the evil-doers below.
DeleteI don't think I have ever seen a Cessna with a twin fifty ball turret, maybe you could crowd fund a conversion?
ReplyDeleteThat would be cool.
Go for it. We won't tell. Oh yeah, train up Murphy as the gunner.
ReplyDeleteSaw Puff working out near Bien Hoa one night. Hear the plane, see the tracers and then the noise. Sure glad I wasn't in the target zone.
ReplyDeleteEglin or Hurlburt?! Hurlburt has a mother lode of unique aircraft on static display (Air Commando after all).
ReplyDeleteThese are Eglin...but I didn't miss Hurlburt. Stick around.
