That's right...they even have a parade for dogs during Mardi Gras. It's the Krewe of Barkus.
And you can guess who just had to go.
I've never seen Armstrong Park so crowded. It's like every dog in North America showed up and brought their humans with them.
Many dogs and owners were in costumes, the these this year being pirates. Murphy and Belle just rocked some casual beads instead.
Orleans Parish Deputies on the job.
The crowds were enthusiastic and heavy. Lots of dog treats being tossed to the dogs. Belle won't usually take food from strangers but I think Murphy gained about three pounds--he grabbed everything.
The dogs got a lot of love.
At the reviewing corner, the heads of the parade singled Murphy and Belle out as examples of German Sheherds, "known for their proud, regal bearing and their loyalty".
A beautiful day and a fabulous crowd.
Belle made a new friend.
And this poor man was just trying to eat his chicken when Murphy, followed by Belle, zeroed in on him and started shamelessly begging for it.
Everyone else was cracking up as these two were focused on this man and his chicken to the exclusion of everything else. Belle even sat as the man tried to explain that he didn't want to share his lunch,
But they got no chicken...alas. They just had to content themselves with countless dog biscuits from everyone else.
And lots of dog love.
It was so crowded, between the walkers and the spectators, that it took us two hours to get from Armstrong Park down to Jackson Square and back. I got sunburnt. In February. (Smoke that, people in Michigan and West Virginia!) And a great time was had by all.
Murph,
ReplyDeleteGot to ask.....Do you actually work or are you recently won the lottery? Seems like a lot of leisure time being posted lately.
P.S. If you won the lottery, where's the Corsair?
I work...Work my ass off. And as soon as the work day is over, I'm off to play. Office by day, then right to the evening parades. And DEFINITELY no surplus of cash, trust me. But I'm scraping by...and loving it, as Don Adams used to say.
ReplyDelete=)
DeleteIt's Mardi Gras time juvat! This is how it's done. It's rushing home after work to get the kids ready for parades and late night because parades and then Tuesday the whole city shuts down and a lot of business will be closed Wednesday too, for a recovery day.
DeleteThe dogs seem to be enjoying the Big Easy as much as you Murph!
ReplyDeleteThe Heck Hounds have definitely acclimated well here.
DeleteReally!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure who enjoys NOLA more, you or the dogs...
Awesome, sounds like a great time was had by all.
ReplyDeleteI noticed about half way through that there was none, despite countless dogs. People were cleaning up after their dogs pretty well. (Of course if you didn't, I'm sure the crowd-shaming would be epic.)
ReplyDeleteI got sunburned today in Northwest Indiana. Walked the beach in 65 degree weather.. Sky was clear enough that I could see the Chicago skyline.
ReplyDeleteI almost went barefoot.
Belle is a born ham.
ReplyDeleteYes she is. Pretty and knows it.
DeleteBEST freak show dog parade I've ever seen. I can't believe how social people are in New Orleans.
ReplyDeleteI love the first picture of the pups with the bright pink flowers in the background...nice choice.
LOL, glad you had fun!
ReplyDeleteBelle and Murphy seemed to be enjoying the extra attention
ReplyDeleteHey Murphy;
ReplyDeleteExcellent pics of the heck hounds but I was surprised how mellow Murphy was and Belle. It is good that you are enjoying Naworleans.
Dog Krews! That looks like fun. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDelete....that first pic of the two hounds in this blog entry made me say, "Awww" out loud.
