Alaska, Day #2

Rolled out of Talkeetna this morning. Had a headache for some reason but it didn't last too long. Went up to Denali National Park and visited with Ranger Extraordinaire Liz, who graciously made me lunch consisting of a healthy yet tasty salad. Then we went to visit the park service sled dogs. Yep. Sled dogs. The National Park Service maintains a bunch of these dogs and uses them in the winter. (When I get home, there will be pictures. Promise.) Then I drove up Denali Park road all the way up to Mile 30 as it was actually open that far to private vehicles at this time. Didn't see any Moose, but did see a Grizzly Bear fairly close up. That was worth the drive in itself, especially as the bear got close enough that I could have whacked it with a snowball...and don't thing that I didn't think about it. (Pics of the bear to follow as well.)
Then I left Denali and blew up the Parks Highway through Fairbanks to North Pole, and the home of Tom and Misty, Tome being the blogger formerly known as Roanoke Cop and Misty being the owner of The Catholic Cheechako blog. Now I'm here with them for a few days and more stuff will happen tomorrow, some of it blogworthy, I can guarantee it. Stay tuned.

  1. Sounds like you're doing it right. I love North Pole, but haven't met the good folks you made contact with.

    Enjoy.

  6. You should have whacked the bear... But then, I'm sure the NPS would frown on it if you had to defend yourself after provoking the bear...
