Now this is crosswind!

Two planes give it their best try landing at Birmingham, England with a bit of a crosswind.

Needless to say, both aborted and went elsewhere. Sometimes, discretion is indeed the better part of valor.
Full story here.

Nice to know that it's not just the small planes that get screwed over by Mother Nature.

  2. Heck, anytime you're trying to land, and you have to ask the passengers on one side of the plane to direct you, its safe to say that God doesn't want you on that runway at that particular time. I wouldn't argue with Him.

  3. I watched a national guard tanker (KC-135 if I recall correctly) have a difficult time in Amarillo several years ago. I was fully expecting to see a fireball on the runway. It was bad.

  4. Ya got to know when to go. Or not. Both equally important. I had no doubt you would get me back on the ground (in one non mangled blob).

  5. @ Keads: Worry not. I have an almost unblemished safety record.

  6. @ Keads: Yeah, it was a stupid TV antenna on a friend's roof. Put a dent in a gear strut and scraped the belly a bit. but I'm a little less bold these days.

I really liked flying on my C-5A Galaxies. Dial in a little crosswind gear and go for broke. Like what the BUFFs did.
