Opportunity lost...and maybe it's a good thing

So ex-Forrestal is departing Philadelphia today (story below), and locally, the public has been advised of the best times and paces to get a last look at her during the 18-hour tow down the Delaware River.

But for the weather and my leg, I'd have loved to do a fly-over and shoot some photos of that naval legend from above as she departs. Still, it might be just as well, for the idea of one final touch-and-go on her angled flight deck would be tempting indeed.
"November XXXXX is turning base to final for CV-59..."

I gotta think that there's probably a law against it, but since she's already been sold and is no longer Navy property, what's the worst that they could get me for?

Yeah, sometimes bad weather and a bum leg are a blessing in disguise.

  1. Yeah, prob'ly not the best idea ... but I can understand why you'd be tempted. :) On the other hand, she might burst into flames one last time.

(Sailors of a certain generation will get that one...)

    That would be tempting!
You may well have run across this film before, if not you might be interested, nice combination of airplanes, aerial filming, and WWII

  4. My old friend who was our wedding photographer, had sailed on the Forrestal at one point.

  5. Not what you'd want to do, trust me... And a sad end to a great boat...

    1. Oh I WANT to do it...I'm just pretty sure that if I do, something bad will follow. Of course I've been checking the FARs and there's nothing in there about landing a Cessna 172 on a decommissioned aircraft carrier under tow.

    1. At least a touch and go, but it that goes well and the ship appears unattended, it might be a decent opportunity to come back around again, shut down and spend a few minutes souvenir hunting or picture-taking.

  8. If you had landed aboard her, the arresting gear would have been gone, but the arresting officer would have been waiting for you when you got back to base . . .

    ;-)

  10. Three-inch high registration, my friend. Right over the tail. In "you call that contrasting?" colors... cursive is even better...
