Saturday Man Movie

I think that it was the movie Quigley Down Under that really made me appreciate Tom Selleck as anything other than a Magnum, PI character. Here, he plays American cowboy brought to Australia by land baron Marsden for a job that doesn't really work out the way that either had planned.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go practice some more with my .45LC

  1. I think that Quigley was Selleck's best movie - though I did like 3 Men and a Baby too. Magnum PI was a great series. Selleck the man is better than Selleck the actor. I have a lot of respect for him, for his values and for his courage to stand for something good and right.

  2. Louis L'Amour, you might recall, wrote more than once of gunfighters firing multiple shots so fast that it sounded like just one shot, but until this movie I was sort of dubious about it.

Mr. Selleck is much like Mr. Hackman. So good at his craft, even if the film is lacking, he isn't!
    Great movie!

  5. Very good movie and Selleck made it so. He also is good in the Jesse Stones series of movies that show up on the hallmark channels. Can't believe that he is in his early 70's now.

  7. Great movie.

I'd never seen it until I bought it on BluRay to take on one of my trips.

And his quote at the end is priceless.

  9. One of my favorites. Although I kind of liked Dances With Wolves, Quigley is much better - Selleck isn't so whiney-a$$ed as Costner.

Regarding the main star of the movie - the Sharps: Though it's period correct, of course, aesthetically/visually interesting/beautiful, and sold a ton of rifles for C. Sharps, Shiloh, and Pedersoli - I'd have been absolutely tickled if he'd used a Rolling Block.

My Navy Arms (in .444 Marlin - go figure) isn't a particular looker, but my Creedmore special edition¹ is sexy enough¹ to compete favorably with the Sharps in the swimsuit competition.

If I ever get serious about going to CAS shoots (read: if Texas summers weren't so hot), the Scotsman's outfit in that scene would be a pretty good costume, inasmuch as I am partially descended from such stock, and have been known - albeit rarely - to imbibe a wee dram of single malt.

¹ internet photos - too lazy to get mine out to photograph

    1. If the injuns had come upon Kevin Costner 15 minutes earlier the movie would have been called "Wiping With Leaves".
