The first--and last--time that I was in the local Lowes hardware and home improvement store chain in Martinsburg, WV, I couldn't help but notice that they had bilingual signs on everything, from aisle signs to cashier lanes to the exits. When I asked an employee about this, she said that she was disgusted by it too, but that Lowes' headquarters had mandated this for all their stores nationwide. I told the floor manager on my way out that I would not return because of this.
I just passed that store today on my way to the gym and they now have a huge "Help Wanted" banner out front...in Spanish.
What's wrong with hiring people that are at least proficient enough in English to read a simple "Help Wanted" sign in our native language?
I guess it's more important to Lowes to hire help that can speak the language of the mainly illegal alien day laborers than it is to hire staff that can actually answer questions that anyone else might have.
I'm grateful that Home Depot is so close.
