This piece was taken from an article about the violent protesters arrested during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN.
St. Paul attorney Jerome Rudawski found himself in an unusual situation Wednesday when he stood before Ramsey County District Judge Edward Wilson and represented his 21-year-old daughter, Tovah, a college senior who took part in Monday's protest and was charged with third-degree riot, a gross misdemeanor.Riiight. Dad wasn't there and the police officers were, but he knows better than they do what they saw. And in Jerome Rudawski's eyes, I guess it's "peaceful" for his daughter Tovah (which, ironically, is Hebrew for "good") to crap into a bag and take it downtown to throw at police officers and other people that she disagrees with politically.
He said he was shocked at what her experience showed of the system he thought he knew.
"This has put a terrible taste in my mouth about the law, I'll tell you that," he said. "I'm not sure how I would ever explain to the next generation of lawyers what happened at the RNC."
The criminal complaint alleges Tovah Rudawski and 17 others were in the area of Shepard Road and Ontario Street when they began advancing toward police in opposition to orders. From behind a large corrugated metal sign, they threw fecal matter, rocks, chunks of blacktop, exploding fireworks and other objects at police, the complaint says.
Nonsense, her father said: "She was absolutely peacefully protesting."
This is what happens when you spoil kids and fail to teach them right from wrong. And when you blindly defend them like Jerome is defending Tovah, it only encourages them to go farther the next time.
I'm sure that many of you can remember back when you were young. I know that I can, and I recall my parents NEVER blindly defending me and denying that I did something when another adult told them that they'd just seen me do it. I grew up with the understanding that any other adult witnessing me cutting up was the same thing as my parents seeing it themselves, because my parents knew that other adults weren't going to come up to the house and lie to them about me for no apparent reason. If a neighbor said that I did something, then I was guilty. And looking back, it wasn't unfair, because I unquestionably did the things that the neighbors told my parents that I'd done. But it taught me that it was important to do the right thing even when my parents weren't looking, because they had ways of seeing everything and I was held accountable for things that they couldn't possibly have seen me do.
I think that it made me grow up a better kid, at least better than many of the kids that I've known and dealt with professionally who thumbed their noses at everyone, adults included, because they knew that their parents would take their side against anyone--neighbors, teachers, the police, etc.--who reported any misconduct to their parents and expected the parents to actually correct that kid. we've all heard it:
"MY child would NEVER do such a thing! How DARE you accuse him/her/it of that!"
Meanwhile, the kid is standing right behind that parent, grinning and making faces at you.
That's the kid that usually winds up in more serious trouble as an adult. Mom and dad can't defend them forever and doing so when they're young is only setting them up for greater failure later on in life.
Tovah Rudawski is learning that now. (Or maybe not, since she's still getting free legal defense from daddy even though she's technically an adult now at age 21.)
if there's any justice to come from this, it'll have to come in the form of a judge who slaps Tovah hard enough to get through to her, or potential employers who Google her name, find this story, and decide that it's not worth the trouble to hire someone so immature and spoiled that they throw their own poop at people, just like a monkey in the zoo. The internet is forever, and even daddy can't make this story go away.
EDITED TO ADD: Looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. While most attorneys go their entire professional lives without ever being disciplined, Daddy Jerome Rudawski's been sanctioned and disciplined at least four times by the State Bar in Minnesota and even had his license to practice law suspended twice by the Minnesota Supreme Court, the second time for continuing to represent clients during the first suspension. I guess it only makes sense that the rules of proper conduct shouldn't apply to Tovah when Daddy Jerome still doesn't want to obey them as an adult and alleged professional. No wonder his kid grew up to be a punk.
I had the same experince as you growing up. It needs to be that way some what today.
ReplyDeleteI was raised the right way, and I try to raise my kids the right way, but somewhere between our generations there was some sort of "anomaly" I guess.
ReplyDeleteIt suddenly became perfectly okay for a kid to do whatever they wanted, because they knew mommy and daddy would back them up regardless.
Is this funny or sad? I am not sure oh dear little Doggie,
ReplyDeleteTovah Rudawski works as an advocate for welfare rights in Olympia, Washington, and is a collaborative founder of an amazing anti-gentrification group. She is a college senior that has spent her education doing largely community development and social justice work. She devoted her trip home to Minnesota-the first in months- to work with the Poor Peoples Economic Human Rights Campaign. For days of this trip, she languished in a solitary prison cell. Tovah Rudawski, as well as countless others, was arrested because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time, stuck in a St. Paul park surrounded by riot cop blockades. The issued complaint was identical to dozens. As those actually present can attest, she was doing absolutely nothing.
Jerry Rudawski has gone above and beyond in helping not just his daughter, but also her close friend stuck in said park, who could not afford legal defense otherwise. Directly from college graduation this young man went to New Orleans to become involved in various community organizing efforts going on in the aftermath of Katrina. (Have no fear, little Doggie! Recuperation efforts are not being taken care of by your tax dollars!)
It is hard to wonder how parents could have gone wrong in raising such passionate young people. I can only assume that you hold them to yourself in comparative ignorance, blatantly proud of your bark as well as bite! It is apparent that you were raised to have excellent critical thinking skills, and you really know how to pull in the research! May you be an example to us all. Taking a look at the rest of this exciting blog of yours, I am all too entertained by your riveting analyses. Of course your child would never doing anything like this! Do you even believe in global warming?
Actually, I don't believe that man is causing the earth's temperature to rise. Nope. Sure don't.
ReplyDeleteI also don't believe that Tovah was just standing around, not doing anything, when she got picked up in a case of mistaken identity. As one who has participated in mass arrests of so-called "peaceful" demonstrators (and they're usually anything but peaceful), I have a pretty good idea how it all played out, especially because the police can't and don't want to arrest everyone, so they focus on the few who present a threat to public order or the health and safety of the public...people like Tovah, who hurl their own poop at people, usually while screaming obscenities.
I'll also point out that Tovah had to travel some distance from Washington State to put herself at the scene of her own arrest, and such arrests rarely if ever happen to the vast majority of people who stick to going to work/school/church every day and avoid going to places of conflict and trying to escalate said conflict for no reason and with no definable purpose whatsoever.
And yes, I'm aware that Tovah has devoted considerable time and effort defending and advancing the claims of some people to the wealth and property of others. Be it demanding increased welfare payments to those who refuse to work or fighting to keep people from developing their own property and making bad neighborhoods into nice ones by pushing out non-working, crime-causing dregs, Tovah is showing that she either does not understand the freedoms that our nation was founded upon or else she despises them. Maybe she'll grow out of this childish phase she's in when daddy stops paying all of her bills and makes her stand on her own two feet so that she can develop an understanding of the worth and value of one's own money, but I'm getting the idea that said day isn't coming any time soon.
Hope she enjoyed jail. That's what happens when kids do childish things in the grown-people world.
BTW, Meg. I saw your facebook page pic. You're kinda cute. You ever been to Harpers Ferry, WV?
I wonder if she really thinks she was talking to the dog....

ReplyDeleteI stopped reading here. Thanks for filling me in with what I needed to know.
The reason my son is a responsible young man is that my wife and I have always insisted that he take responsibility for his actions.
ReplyDeleteFor example, when he was involved at school in an altercation that crossed the line into violent mode, the assistant principal called us and proposed to suspend him. We backed up the AP
The AP was profuse in his gratitude; I gather that the parents of some of the other kids involved were trying to have their kids avoid punishment, but the AP stood his ground. Mind you, this was not a public school, which means that the administration was inherently more $u$ceptible to parental influence.
Because I have always insisted that my son take responsibility, the closest I have come to Jerry Rudawski's predicament was when I defended my son in a Village Court for a speeding ticket. The plea deal the Village Attorney cut with him was the same as was given to any other first-timer who was not under the influence of ethanol or other mind-altering substances.
The judge imposed the fine and told my son to be careful in the future (which he has been). And, of course, the Dept. of Motor Vehicles assessed the requisite points, so my son had to dig into his own earnings to take the Defensive Driving course for the point reduction.
If Jerry Rudawski has such a terrible taste in his mouth about the law, then I would suggest that he do what so many other disillusioned attorneys have done -- Stop Whining and Quit the Practice of Law!!!
Harpers Ferry huh?

Does this mean you are psychic? Do you have some kind of special insights in the goings-on of downtown St. Paul from all the way over there in WV that you neglected to share with us? Because I find it pretty hard to believe you really know that much about the situation when you’re afraid to leave the computer in your basement because you have to compulsively respond when somebody might make a comment on your right-wing blog posts.
The first night of the RNC there was also a concert being held at a near by venue. Many groups had shown up that night to peacefully protest various policies of the GOP, along with the group Tovah arrived to participate with. I am not denying that there was an anarchist group that began violently destructing property, nor will i argue that they did not disserve to be arrested. However, the anarchists were wearing all black and had their faces covered in hanchercheifs. In other words, they were pretty easy to pick out of a crowd. Not to mention they were violently destructing property, which is an action that usually calls attention to itself.
The majority of the peaceful protestors arrested that night face charges identical to that of Tovah's. Are you really willing to believe that many people, from separate organizations, all got together and decided to throw shit at cops? What has been the general consensus here in St. Paul, is that none of the charges brought against these people will stand up in court. In fact, there has been talk in dismissing all the charges of anyone arrested for protesting during the RNC. Did you not hear about that over in West Virginia?
And to let you in on some very inside information exclusively from St. Paul... Listen close, you aren't going to hear this anywhere else: Remember how I said there was a concert going on that night? Many people simply walking to the concert got arrested just for being in the street. They were showing the tickets they had paid for to the cops who showed no hesitation in promptly shooting them in the face with pepper spray and clubbing them with night sticks. Is that protocol? I want to ask you opinion since you would know more about mass arrests of peaceful protestors than myself, a mere civilian. Many of the concert goers were released two hours after their so-called "arrests" with no explanation. At the time of Tovah's arrest, she was simply sitting in a park... and no she was not holding feces.
Oh, yes! The words "National Lawyers Guild" pretty much tell you the whole story.
ReplyDeleteAh, Tessa, Tessa, Tessa...
ReplyDeleteI don't need to be psychic to have a fair idea about what went on. I trust my brothers in blue who have no reason to fabricate charges against Miss Rudawski.
Yet they did charge her, which tells me that at least one impartial law enforcement professional felt that he had probable cause to arrest her as opposed to everyone else who was there. And the officers reported that she was one of a group of only 18 individuals who were in fact refusing to disperse, using barricades to prevent the police from dispersing them, and hurling feces. That's pretty specific, and it's a far cry from your version, which appears to be: "everyone was going to a concert and just got beaten and arrested for no reason."
And even your version damns Miss Rudawski. You say that most people who were arrested were released in a couple of hours--no doubt with citations to appear in court at a later date, a normal procedure--Miss Rudawski was detained and held for...how long was it? Meg could probably tell us if you can't. That suggests that Miss Rudawski was charged with something a little more serious than a mere disorderly person charge. Do I really have to explain the concept of "probable cause"? I tend to believe the officers who presumably don't know her and would have no reason to lie.
Now I'm sure you'll agree with me that none of this would have happened if Miss Rudawski had just stayed in Washington State and studied, or even if she'd gone to Louisiana to actually help people post-hurricane instead of devoting her time (and daddy's money) to going to a political convention and acting like a fool--uh, I mean "protesting" outside it. What did she ever hope to accomplish by doing that? We both know that the answer is "nothing". Like everyone else who went there to act the fool, it was all about the fun of being disruptive and disrespectful to others in a large crowd setting where the numbers reasonably guarantee anonymity and protection from consequences.
But in every such case, there are always those who have to push it too far, and they tend to be the ones who pay. Miss Rudawski appears to be one of those, and she's now no doubt basking in her reputation as some sort of left-wing hero while her daddy cleans up her mess and gets ready to pays her fines out of his own pocket.
But kudos to you for sticking up for your friend like that. Loyalty's always admirable, even when it's misplaced. And you look pretty good in your facebook picture. You busy this coming week-end?
I personally know Jerome and he's a smart, caring and compassionate man. Any child would be lucky to have him as their father. Tovah's community work and passion for what she believes should be commended. As it is we've become a nation of followers--she was speaking out as she has the right to do so last time I checked the Constitution.
ReplyDeleteI admire our police men and women as well but they're human. And in the midst of a chaotic scenario it can be hard to see who is throwing what, if anything. Tovah's a peaceful young woman and has no prior history of any outbursts or violence whatsoever. It would be a shame, if due to human error, she not only had to go to jail but also had her future impacted in a negative way.
And btw, since the Supreme Court ruled in Jerome's favor, do you dispute the outcome? The Supreme Court ruled in Bush's favor. Do you dispute their findings?
I have met jerome a few times for some court cases and I must say he is NOT a Professional, Well Educated man. I have taken some classes for paralegal and I am a very kind and caring person and when I seen what he did to my client while representing her I was crushed by his behavior he came up to my client numerous times calling her an inappropriate name, I had to have the balif that came out into the waiting room to talk with him about his language and on top of that when bringing up in court his motion (which was not even given proper notice to me or my client) he slurred his words and could not even converstate with the Judge which of course granted in my clients favor of a continuence and for Jerome to "Get your act together" as the judge so politly stated. I just wonder how people like this get there license and pass there education courses. So in otherwords this guy is a bad person and Attorney in my opinion and about this article I just have to laugh for as a parent myself I will always be behind my child but I would never defend my child if I believe or know wrong duing was caused.
ReplyDeleteI've known Tovah for years. She's a compassionate, hard-working, and thoughtful person. I can guarantee she's doing more to make this world a better place than you are.
ReplyDeleteYeah, ok Brian. Throwing your own shit at police officers does so much to make our world a better place, doesn't it?
