OK, politics aside, since my dear mother gave me a DVD player for Christmas and my pal Aaron gave me copies of Seasons 5 and 6 of Doctor Who, I'm finally able to offer an opinion on something relevant: Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor
Verdict: So far--four episodes in--he sucks. He lacks the gravitas and the maturity that one would expect from a 900+ year old Time Lord, and the BBC screwed up by trying to appeal to a younger, "hipper" audience at the expense of the old guard fans by casting a boy in a man's role.
I mean, it's almost as bad as casting Daniel Craig as James Bond.
But on the bright side...that Amy Pond... Rowr! She's liable to keep me watching for a while.
Haven't watched Dr. Who, but really Daniel Craig as James Bond is just YUMMY!! He has a Steve McQueen quality about him.
ReplyDeleteOh, Heather...no! Craig was an attempt to turn Bond into just another action guy, with none of the suave Bond lines or gimmicks or any of the other traits that made Bond BOND. They destroyed the franchise with Craig, sacrificing it all just to make the character resemble countless other forgettable action heroes. James Bond was unique and they erased that uniqueness totally with Craig's bland portrayal.
ReplyDeleteI never thought that I would ever say this, but... "Bring back Roger Moore!"
Your assessment of Matt Smith is spot on - too young. However, I must qualify that to this extent: in the 6th season, he had a couple of episodes with Ms. Gillan conspicuously absent, and he's a completely different person when she's not there. I'll be interested in what you think after you've seen "Closing Time".
ReplyDeleteI can't comment on Dr. Who as I have never watched it intentionally. But Craig as Bond does not work. Bond is not just an action hero, but a British action hero with the sense of British charm, humor, and grace. Craig doesn't have those things needed for the role of Bond.
ReplyDeleteAmy is worth watching
ReplyDeleteBut Daniel Craig is manly in the same vein as the ultimate Bond Sean Connery. Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan are girly men!
ReplyDeleteAmy Pond is a hottie, no doubt. I still think the best Time Lord is Tom Baker, although the later incarnations like Chris Eccleson was pretty good.
ReplyDelete@MrGs: I thought Baker was great, but also Peter Davidson. David Tennant had really grown on me too, and then he was gone.
ReplyDeleteOk, so you finally got a DVD player?
ReplyDeleteDoctor Who is fun. The important thing to remember is not to get too attached to a particular doctor, cause he'll change. That's life; enjoy the show for whatever reason you choose. We're still waiting for the local library system to get the 2nd half of season 6 - nice cliffhanger in the middle.
Bond is another franchise; Craig will eventually get too old. Then they'll pick someone else. Of course, there was no Bond movie this year because Hollywood doesn't have enough cash to make one.
Tom Baker spent so much time as the doctor, that once his time was done, he had some trouble finding other work. He may be a lot of people's favorite doctor, but that probably wasn't much consolation to him when he needed to pay bills.
There it is again, the ugly money issue. Showbiz is a business after all. We should count our blessings that sometimes they actually do manage to entertain their customers rather than just indoctrinate them.
Ver nice, I think I watched a couple of episodes of the original version and haven't seen it since... sigh
ReplyDeleteI got very attached to David Tennant, myself. Matt Smith always looks to me like he's wearing one of those creepy, too-realistic face masks, but I love the show so much that he is annoying me less and less. I just saw the Christmas special and got all melty inside.
