So tonight I pull into my driveway just before midnight. It's still ice-covered so I park at the bottom to walk up. As I open my vehicle door to get out, way up at the house I hear a single loud "Woof!" It's Belle, and she's starting to do the watchdog thing. It was just one bark, but it was a loud one and appropriate to the situation since she probably doesn't know my vehicle's sounds the way that Murphy does. Murphy would never bark at my vehicle or the neighbors' vehicles in their own driveways, but any strange vehicles in my drive or at the neighbors gets a response from him. A wise dog, he discriminates appropriately. Belle will learn from Murphy eventually, but her first tentative defensive bark at me tonight made me feel as proud as a dad whose kid just rode her first two-wheel bike.
Of course then I came in the house and found a bag of peanuts had been pulled down from the counter and scattered across the kitchen along with a roll of paper towel. The obvious suspect is Murphy but he's never messed with either the peanuts or the paper towels as long as he's been here and both have always been on that counter. No, this time it was most likely Belle, expanding her horizons again.
Dammit.
Dammit.
Dammit.
She's been framed....framed I tell ya. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAnd the bark was probably her telling Murphy you were home and to skedaddle because she didn't want him to get in trouble.
Poor Belle.
hehehe, the apprentice is learning from the master counter surfer.... You don't know whether to be proud or string a hot wire across the counter.
ReplyDeleteHeh heh heh. Two smart dogs working as a team. You're doomed.

ReplyDeletePerhaps you should write a book. "The Canine Guide to Good Housekeeping, Tips For The Guardian"
