Belle update

I should never have gone to a Native American vet, because he scalped Belle.

And she's not happy.
The way that they eradicate the heartworms is with two doses of Melarsomine Dihydrochloride, which is an arsenic, in the lumbar area 24 hours apart. The basic idea is to give the animal enough arsenic to kill the worms, but not the host animal itself, in this case, Belle.

The vet says that she came through ok, but that she'll be sore and tired for a few days. That's certainly been the case tonight, as she has spent the evening denned up in my office behind some boxes and she doesn't want to eat, play or deal with Murphy at all. Poor girl.

And poor my bank account, too. That was a lot of money to spend on a dog that I just met. But she's a really nice dog, and the alternative to my not spending it is that she'd die.

It's only money, right? Dollar bills don't love you back. But Belle has loved me like crazy, ever since she got here.

That really wasn't much of a decision, come to think about it.

Sleep well, my girl. You're home now.

  1. Glad she is home with you and Murph. No, the stack of cash cannot love you back. In fact love is priceless. Take care of her. I know you will.

  2. Best wishes to both you and Belle. I'm quite sure she really knows that you are only doing what's best for her. And, I'm also quite sure she will still love you. Take care of her and yourself and stay warm.

I am glad to see Belle is home and making progress.
    Love knows no dollar amount.

  5. When my son's guinea pig (who cost us all of $5) came down with a skin infection, we spent a few hundred on the vet's bill. And the guinea pig lost ALL of his fur from the neck backward.

But if you love your pet, it makes perfect sense.

  6. Heal quick, young lady!

You're a good man to take care of her like this.

  7. The treatment has changed since my Rocky had to have it. He got some kind of daily IV and stayed at the clinic for over a week. Belle is lucky to have you! God Bless.

  8. I'm surprised your vet used that treatment. My parents rescue Old English Sheepdogs in Texas. They just give them a heartworm pills normally and after a year they clear up 100%.

  12. Give her hug for me. And you can't compute their worth in money terms. They are gifts no matter what they cost us.

  15. Money can be replaced, with no difference between the old bank balance and the new one. People and pets, though, are unique and leave a hole in our hearts when they go.

Stay warm, and hope all y'all feel better soon. (And that Murphy doesn't get too creative while he's out of sight!)
