Equipment test fail

So I've been running my one operational generator every couple of weeks just to make sure it stays functional. And it has always been fine, right up until this morning. I turned the fuel on, switched the power switch on, and pulled the cord...SNAP! The cord broke and most of it retreated back into it's housing. With hurricane half a day out. Fucking wonderful.

  2. That's Murphy's Law. That's one of Murphy's Laws. Whatever can fail, will fail when it is most inconvenient.

The irony burns. Hope you survive.

  3. If you have a cordless drill, check Youtube for "start a generator with a drill"

At the end of the situation, you may want to upgrade to electric starter. Also in youtube.

  4. Before next year's hurricane season, I will replace the two unreliable generators with a new one, electric start and warranteed.

    1. Generac is the latest flavor. But I have a Coleman Powermate that I barely have taken car of and it has never failed me.
Get bi-fuel (Gasoline and propane) and install a transfer switch.

  5. If you go electric start, plan on charging the battery with a batter maintainer.

ANd change the battery every 2 years, regardless.
