Severe Thunderstorm Warning

So this morning, around 0400 hours, I was awakened by the screeching of the emergency broadcast alert coming from my nightstand. Still mostly asleep, I reached over and grabbed my alarm clock, which I knew to have such a feature, and I spent the next ten to twenty seconds grappling with it and banging on it before I realized that the sound was coming from my iphone's pilot weather radar app instead.

Sorry, alarm clock.

The phone warned of severe thunderstorms moving through the area, and sure enough, I could hear the thunder off in the distance already, and it grew closer quickly. It wasn't long before the lightning was flashing outside, and the thunder was really ramping up. And the next thing I heard was nails on the hardwood floor next to my bed, and the soft whine of an unhappy lady Shepherd.

I gave her a few pets and reassured her, but every new thunderclap undid those reassurances. Belle was not happy at all.

Murphy, on the other hand, was snoring contentedly on his dog bed. Thunder doesn't faze him in the least.

More thunder came, and more whines, and then a couple of pokes from Belle's muzzle. Aw, really?

Belle doesn't normally like to be on my bed, and on a typical day I can't even lure her up there, but this was different. This was scary bad storm. So I sighed, moved over and patted the bed and she climbed up and snuggled up tight to me, staying right there until the storm passed.

Murphy the Bold never stirred once.
"I don't mind the thunder but can you belay that girl's whining, please?"

Much better this morning.
"I wasn't scared at all. I was just...uh--making sure dad was ok. Yeah, that's it!"

    1. Yeah, she's a weird one. Take her to the dog park and she beats up every other dog until the y recognize her as boss, but here at home...submissive city. Not sure what happened in the other places she's lived but she's got a forever home here though. Her and Murph.

  5. The rare thunder we get here doesn't seem to bother Pebbles at all. She treats it like a big truck rumbling by.

    But fireworks?

Lions and tigers and bears, OH MY!

She just totally gets all skittish and freaked out.

  6. My cats ignore thunderstorms. The dogs come up on the porch. The ferrets, long before the storm is audible to me, troop down the stairs and go under the cedar chest.

  7. The chihuahua puppy shakes violently during thunder. Of course, she's 6 pounds!
