New Orleans Saturday update

Power is coming back slowly to the surrounding areas and gas stations are reopening out in the suburbs. I’ve managed to buy and barter for enough that I’m set for the next week or so and power should be back by then. Spent the morning helping friends put a tarp on their ridiculously steep roof and now moving supplies between various aid stations for local distribution. I’m saving my gas for the generator but I’ve got a ton of spare diesel for the van so I’m donating it to the cause.

Things are coming together pretty good here and we’re counting our blessings that we didn’t get hit as hard as communities to the west that really took it on the chin. New Orleans, despite the lessons of Katrina sixteen years ago, was still not ready for another direct hit and so many people that were here then still weren’t prepared for even this. No supplies set aside, no last minute store runs when it was obvious this was coming, no evacuating when they could…sad.  Others however are bringing supplies in, distributing them, preparing food for others and filling the gaps that the government can’t cover. In short, we’re getting it done and should be nearly back to normal in a week or so for much of the area.

  1. It's New Orleans, Louisiana. It's always "sumbody elses falut, job etc, where the free stuff at?" It always shocks me how fucking lazy so many are there. They work harder at doing nothing than almost anyplace else in the US. Spend whatever you get and ask for all the handouts and demand more. I was shocked at what I saw happen to the staple foods my mother handed out at the local parish hall. If it couldn't be microwaved or easily converted to cash, you'd find a good bit of it in the ditch. Bagged rice and beans dumped within minutes of being handed out. Bitching that the church was not handing out cash or Doritos. Fuck that.

    1. It's like that everywhere there is aid available to the monetarily disadvantaged.

We have SHARE here, which is a program where, once a month, you buy a bag of food. Usually includes fresh veggies and processed meats and uncooked rice and pasta and beans.

Rule was, you buy a bag you help bag the bags (X number of Y items per bag.) So here my handicapped wife and I are bagging like there's no tomorrow and most everyone else is sitting on their asses watching us. Yeah, no.

We need to reduce food stamps and increase gubmint cheese and other commodities.

And if they are seen tossing stuff out, they should lose their privileges.
