More people who need to be kicked

Self-important women with a whole cart full of groceries who jump into the "11 items or less" express item line ahead of the guy carrying ONE ITEM...and the cashier that lets her.

And in this case, I'm talking about a red-haired overweight woman at Food Lion who saw me approaching with my one item and actually picked up speed to beat me into the only express lane with her cart. I'm also talking about the young male cashier who just looked at me as she began putting her items on the belt and put his hands up as if to say "what can I do?"

I'll tell you what you can do, Casper Milquetoaste. You can tell her to take her fat ass over to one of the regular lanes and stand in line like everyone else...and you might even suggest that she put the Haagen-Das back in the freezer because she sure doesn't need it!

Suffice it to say, my one item was deposited on the Customer Service desk and the employee there was told that I'd be back when they actually got serious about customer service.

  1. Dude- Food Kitty and customer service are mutually exclusive terms! Please tell me you don't buy any meat there!

  2. Has anyone ever seen a cashier tell someone they had too many items in those express lanes? I haven't.

They're all afraid to. The customer is always right. You just had one item, she had...a bunch...

    What comes around...

  3. I hate to tell you this, but it's very, very likely the place is cameraed all up; and the Casper Milquetoaste has no choice but to wait on the absolute first customer whether they're 'breaking the rules' or not. I guarantee it. Absolutely. It doesn't matter to the management of this particular store that this B-word 'broke the rules'; that kid couldn't do squat about it. I can pretty much guarantee that if he had called the fat chick on her line-jumping he would have been disciplined or fired. Period.

You need to know these things before you go making judgement calls about service people; their lives are not as flexible as you seem to think.

AND; What the H-word is a FOOD LION? that is so weird. Although I shop at somewhere called Logli, so...

  4. Quite honestly, I think the stores aren't saying anything about the "over the limit" purchases because those customers are making more money for the store. Think about it, you come in to buy one single item, but, the other customer has a whole cart of groceries-$$$. Who is the better bet to possibly piss off? You may have walked out with out your one item, but at least they got the larger sale from the woman with the big cart full of stuff. It would cost them much more if she walked out and left her groceries there. That's why I think they never say anything. Just a thought.

  5. I'll second JL. I used to work as a grocery store cashier, and there is very little we can do to stop people from entering an express lane. I could occasionally divert people before they got in (if there was a fairly empty standard lane open nearby), but once they get their mountain of crap to the conveyer, the hassle of trying to send them somewhere else is just not worth it.

And people do it all the time. Eventually, you just accept it, and stop sweating the glares. Besides, if you have to annoy someone, it's just better sense to help the person spending $200 over the one spending $5.

  6. Speaking of Tigers instead of Lions - the Detroit ones were worthy opponents in the ALCS.

My colleague at work, an avid - and until last year, long suffering - Rangers fan, predicts Rangers over Cards in six.

Wish our local football team could get an ownership makeover like the Rangers got last year. This Sunday, the 'Pokes play the Rams at 3:15. At 7:05, a bit over a half-mile away, the Rangers play the Redbirds in Game 4 of the Series.

I'm not going anywhere near Arlington...

  7. Nicely done, too bad you didn't talk directly to the manager!

  8. As it is with locks so it is with express lane signs - they are only there to keep the honest people out.

  9. I think the best way to handle a situation like that is to harass the offending individual yourself, you will feel better and the cashier will be cheering to themselves. I have been in a similar situation before and been asked to go ahead by the person in front of me so not all are jerks.
